Paper 4
How is PSLE English Oral marked?
PSLE English Oral (Paper 4, Oral Communication) is worth 40 of the 200 marks: 15 for Reading Aloud and 25 for Stimulus-based Conversation. It takes about 10 minutes: 5 minutes to prepare and about 5 minutes with the examiners.
Reading a passage aloud fluently and expressively, with clear and accurate pronunciation, to suit the purpose, audience and context of the situation given.
Holding a conversation with the examiners on a topic based on a photo: expressing personal opinions, ideas and experiences clearly, and speaking fluently with clear pronunciation, accurate grammar and a range of vocabulary.
- Read the situation first: who is listening, and why?
- Use the preparation time to mark pauses, emphasis and tricky words
- Give a clear view, then support it with reasons and examples
- Answer the follow-up question asked, not a memorised script

What does each level focus on?
Before P6, school assessments are set by each school. So we build the underlying skills first, and introduce the PSLE formats step by step.

P5
Working with PSLE formats
Compositions planned from picture prompts, situational writing, open-ended comprehension, synthesis and transformation, and conversation about a photo. Preparing for P5
P6

Full-paper practice under calm, timed conditions, revision targeted to each child, and rehearsal of both parts of Oral.
