PSLE English Oral (Paper 4, Oral Communication) is worth 40 of the 200 marks in PSLE English Language, or 20%. It has two parts: Reading Aloud, worth 15 marks, and Stimulus-based Conversation (SBC), worth 25 marks. The paper takes about 10 minutes: 5 minutes to prepare, then about 5 minutes with the examiners.

Key points

  • Paper 4 = 40 of 200 marks (20%)
  • Reading Aloud = 15 marks; Stimulus-based Conversation = 25 marks
  • About 10 minutes in all: 5 minutes of preparation, about 5 minutes of examination
  • The two parts are not linked by theme

How is PSLE English Oral structured?

PartWhat happensMarks
1. Reading AloudYour child reads a passage aloud to suit the purpose, audience and context of a given situation.15
2. Stimulus-based ConversationYour child holds a conversation with the examiners on a topic based on a photo.25

The two parts are not linked thematically, so the passage and the photo can be about quite different things. Your child uses the preparation time to look at both before the examination begins.

What do examiners look for in Reading Aloud?

SEAB assesses whether a child can “read aloud fluently and expressively with clear and accurate pronunciation to suit purpose, audience and context”. In other words, Reading Aloud is reading to someone, for a reason, not simply decoding words correctly.

  • Read the situation first. Who is listening, and why? An announcement sounds different from a story.
  • Mark the passage during preparation. Pauses at punctuation, words to stress, and any tricky words to say slowly.
  • Find a steady, natural pace. Rushing is the most common reason clear readers lose fluency.
  • Let expression follow the meaning. Warm where the text is warm, clear and firm where it gives instructions.

What do examiners look for in Stimulus-based Conversation?

SEAB assesses whether a child can “express personal opinions, ideas and experiences clearly and appropriately to engage the listener”, and “speak fluently, with clear pronunciation and grammatical accuracy, using a range of appropriate vocabulary and structures”. SBC is worth more than Reading Aloud (25 marks against 15), and it rewards real conversation rather than a recited answer.

  • Look closely at the photo and say what it brings to mind.
  • Connect the topic to real experience: something your child has seen, done or felt.
  • Give a clear view, then a reason and an example.
  • Listen to the follow-up question and answer that question, not a memorised script.

How can parents help with PSLE Oral at home?

A few minutes of relaxed practice, often, does more than a long session the night before. Try these:

  • Ask your child to read a short paragraph aloud to you, then talk about who it was written for.
  • Look at a photo in the news together and ask, “What do you think is happening? Why?”
  • When your child gives an opinion, ask for one reason and one example.
  • Let pauses happen. A short pause to think is natural; a considered answer beats a rushed one.
  • Avoid memorised “model answers”: they tend to fall apart under a follow-up question.
